Betty was an active community volunteer for many years. From her first floor apartment and porch in the NWR houses, accompanies by her faithful dog, Rocky, she functioned as a neighborhood. ambassador, talking and listening to everyone, offering wisdom and friendship. a member of Neighborhood Women Housing Board (NWR) for ten years, she also worked with Vitas/Americord, doing gardening, especially the Red Shed Garden in Williamsburg which was named in her honor. She took charge of cooking for the anual community meeting as well as all the Neighborhood Women events (her meatballs were famous). She worked at the You Can community school program, where, she encouraged youth to have respect for themselves and stay in school. Her memorial servies 2008 brought more people out than any singel meeting. In her youth, she was known for her spectacular dancing with her partner, Jose.
